Awake

I've seen too many sunrises this past week. Instead of drawing today I just needed to say how I feel...Awake! No coffee for me the rest of this week. I'm sure I'll be regretting that decision when the lack of caffeine headache sets in at work around 11 this morning.

However, this does give me my focus for the next 7 days...Lettering. Hand-lettering is so popular now and so beautiful. I've never had good handwriting. But I just read in a art article this weekend that good handwriting can be learned, even later in life. So I'm going to work on some hand-lettering styles. I have a couple of lettering books I bought from creative memories back in the nineties so I'll start with those. Be back tomorrow and fingers are crossed for a good night's sleep tonight.

What am I discovering?

Discoverig Doreen is a journey to finding the creativity that I feel is locked within me. I long to put on paper the visions in my head. A kind friend has pointed out to me that actualizing those visions is just like any other pursuit...it takes practice. Grand master chess players practice, sports figures practice, musicians practice. Even though they have innate talent within them, be it hand/eye coordination or a deep understanding of their medium, they still have to practice to bring forth their full potential.

I'm not even sure I have innate talent! I can't draw worth a darn and a blank canvas frightens me. But, I have a deep desire to create. It's not that I have profound visions floating in my head, but I have ideas. I'm hoping through practice to develop my skill set so that I turn my ideas into tangible artwork. I love mixed media, but I see so much that stylistically looks the same. At first, I'm sure my work will fit that description. But my ultimate goal is uniqueness. I want to know that my artwork is an original expression of my vision.

Whew! That is the first time I have ever verbalized that. And I like what I wrote. I hear in my words a positive, can-do spirit. So, enough writing...It's time to Discover Doreen!
